Fruit Grower News-2023-Tree Fruit Variety Showcase

Major changes are happening in the nursery industry!

Major changes have happened in the nursery industry in the past few years. Where there used to be shortages of bareroot trees, there now seems to be an oversupply. New varieties and strains are always coming into the marketplace. The trend is still “redder is better” but each nursery seems to have very competitive strains of Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, and other popular varieties. Growers may find little difference between strains nowadays. In my opinion, many new “improved” strains are introduced so that the originator can keep their royalty streams flowing. Moser Fruit Tree Sales does not have or promote its own proprietary strains.

The “box” tree is now a very credible alternative to bareroot. But the grower must be ready, willing, and able to plant a small, green tree directly into their system and take proper care of it. They are now becoming grown closer to home, thus reducing freight and trucking issues. One Eastern nursery has a significant Ellepot™ box tree program. This summer I helped a local southwest Michigan greenhouse operator do a pilot project in Ellepots™. They grew some beautiful apple trees and I am hoping that they continue to carry on in the future.

There is NO reason that individual growers cannot do the same on the farm. Call me regarding how my FastFruitTree™ system works. While I am no longer growing significant amounts of FastFruitTrees™ in the greenhouse due to my back and age, I am more than willing to help others learn how. My experiences are available in book form on www.GraftingSystems.com.

More and more growers are looking to do their own, especially as bareroot prices increase and availability of many combinations decrease. Grafting on the farm still is a great alternative for many growers who have the time and willingness to perform their own nursery practices properly. With Scionon™ tools, the job is made much easier and doesn’t require highly trained knife grafters. Call me for Scionon™ grafting tools and other supplies or go to www.GraftingSystems.com . We are the exclusive distributor in the US for Scionon™ grafting tools.
